Apple, Marshmallows, and Self-Control

Here’s a very interesting story…

Mark Stephens, aka Cringley, was a self-described geek back in 1977. Sometime during that year he helped his two bosses (both of whom were named Steve) move out of a garage and into an office. Cringley had become the 12th employee of a young, unknown start-up company in Northern California.

Oh yeah…the two bosses happened to be Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, and the company eventually came to be known as Apple.

At some point during this time Cringley made a decision that would most certainly haunt him for the rest of his life.

Everybody Has A Plan Until…

I don’t consider Mike Tyson to be a positive role model by any stretch of the imagination. However, he said something in an interview one time that really stuck with me.

During an interview before one of his boxing matches the reporters were asking him how he was going to deal with his opponent. The reporters were discussing his opponent’s strategy, style, how he was going to move, etc. Then they asked Mike Tyson what he thought.

Boundaries – Do You Have Them?

In their book Boundaries, Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend tell of an experience one of them had with the parents of a 25 year old man. The parents came to see one of them (we’ll just say it was Dr. Cloud for the sake of the story) with the request to help them “fix” their son, Bill. When Dr. Cloud asked where Bill was, the parents responded that he didn’t want to come.

“Why?” Asked Dr. Cloud

“Because he doesn’t think he has a problem,” they responded.

“Maybe he’s right. Tell me about it.” Dr. Cloud said to their great surprise.

7 Parenting Behaviors That Will Hinder Your Children

I recently read an article from Forbes that was very insightful and that fit very nicely with our philosophies at KW Legacy Ranch. The Forbes article is entitled “7 Crippling Parenting Behaviors That Keep Children From Growing Into Leaders”.

In the article the author, Kathy Caprino, lists 7 things that parents do to hold their children back from thriving and becoming leaders. I found the article to be very interesting and definitely agree with the author’s premise.
